Don't force components into place! If you have to jam them into their socket, there is something wrong. If you push to hard, you run the risk of ripping a pad off.

My Joint Is Ugly!

Remelt it. You can always remelt any joints that didn't come out quite right and they will just pop right back into place. I even like to go over joints I already soldering more than once to make sure they all look pretty when completed.
